Pizol Summit

A new Alpine route, formed in 2012, runs up to the Pizol summit at 2,844 m above sea level. For safety reasons, this route has been redirected in the rock from the Pizol glacier and marked in blue-white. Steel cables have also been installed to act as a handrail in areas exposed to falling rocks.

On this new, attractive route, visitors can climb the Pizol summit and enjoy its fascinating panoramic view without crossing the glacier. The glacier has lost much of its mass and will have disappeared completely by 2030. The route past the glacier is still quite steep and partly exposed as well.

The newly marked trail can reached with the gondola lift and chairlifts Wangs - Furt - Gaffia up to Pizolhütte where the ascent to the Wildseelücke starts. Once you are in the “Lücke” (opening) you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Wildsee, Pizol summit and the Grauen Hörner. The trail along the Wildsee goes up to the Pizol saddle and then to the summit.

The Pizol is a massive block summit with two peaks separated by a small ridge. The higher southern summit has a small summit cross with a summit logbook, and there is a small cairn on the slightly lower northern summit. The first climb to be documented was by Emil Frey-Gessner on the 15th of August 1864, but the summit had probably already been climbed by surveyors in around 1840.

The south side of the Pizol summit leads down into the valley of Calfeisental; to the north-west is the Weisstannental valley and the Taminatal valley is to the east. The neighbouring peaks are the Lavtinahorner (2,770 m above sea level) and the Hochwart (2,770 m above sea level) to the north, the Wildseehörner (2,690 m above sea level) to the north-east, the Zanaihorn (2,821 m above sea level) to the south-east and the Sazmartinhorn (2,728 m above sea level) to the south-west.

A word of warning:

Surefootedness and a head for heights are essential for this Alpine hike.

Last descent into the valley from Pizolhütte leaves at 4 pm!

Route: Pizolhütte - Wildseeluggen - Pizolsattel - Pizolgipfel - Pizolsattel - Pizolgletscher - Wildseeluggen - Pizolhütte

Arrival: Gondola lift and chairlifts Wangs – Furt – Gaffia – Pizolhütte

(60 min.)

Tip

The neighbouring Lavtinahörner are just as beautiful and exciting as the Pizol summit. In contrast to the Pizol, the twelve peaks between Pizol and Hochwart are wild and very desolate.

Alternative descent: Over the Pizol saddle and down the Alp Tersol towards Gigerwald (postal service stop at the dam and by the restaurant), even up to Vättis for the unstoppable hikers (postal service stop to Bad Ragaz).
